Having excellent oral hygiene from a young age is essential to maintaining a healthy smile for a lifetime. Early childhood dental disease can have lifelong implications, resulting in the need for more extensive dentistry on adult teeth. That’s why developing an early childhood habit of brushing and flossing is so important, but if you are a parent, you know that’s easier said than done.
What to Do When Kids Won’t Brush Their Teeth
Tip #1 Start Early
Developing an early oral hygiene habit can begin as soon as infancy. Using an infant dental cloth or a soft, damp washcloth, gently wipe the gums after feeding your newborn or infant. This will keep your infant’s gums and erupting teeth healthy and develop a habit that becomes part of your daily routine.
#2 Make It Fun
Kids may resist new, uncomfortable or boring things, so making brushing and flossing time exciting, fun, and something to look forward to can go a long way toward helping your little one develop brushing and flossing habits that last a lifetime.
Look for music or videos online about brushing. Many are exactly two minutes (the ideal time to spend brushing). Additionally, many child toothbrushes are kid-themed, so let them choose one with a favourite character.
Tip #3 Set the Example
Using tooth time as together time can be particularly meaningful for kids. Watching you brush and floss your own teeth can motivate your little one to emulate you. Don’t forget, kids will need some help brushing and flossing until they develop the appropriate dexterity around age 7-8.
Tip #4 Be Positive. Be Patient.
It may take several weeks or even months to solidify a new habit. Positive reinforcement and even a chart with a reward system can help things along as your little one learns the proper brushing technique.
