Gum disease treatment

Bayside Smiles offers gum disease treatment to our Melbourne patients

Did you know gum disease, or gingivitis, is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults? And that it is easily one of the most preventable diseases? At Bayside Smiles we offer gum disease treatment to help patients with this chronic disease. Like all chronic illnesses there’s no cure for gum disease: it can only be treated. That is why it is important to visit the dentist regularly and have your oral health checked.

If gingivitis is not treated it can – but not always – lead to periodontitis. Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums which is caused by bacterial infection and at this early stage the disease can be reversed because the bone and connective tissue which hold the teeth in place haven’t yet been affected. The reason periodontitis is incurable is because of the damage it can do to your teeth and jaws.

Signs of gingivitis and gum disease

The signs and symptoms can include: red, swollen, tender gums which may bleed when you brush, and gums which are receded or pulled away from your teeth. Gum disease can cause pockets between teeth and gums where food and debris can collect.

You can prevent gingivitis. To do this you must:

  • brush and floss your teeth
  • eat healthy food
  • attend your dentist every six months

It should also be noted that gingivitis and periodontitis can progress without causing you any pain. So if your gums are bleeding it is important to make an appointment with your Bayside Smile’s dentist.

Treating gum disease

At Bayside Smiles, we offer treatments to cure gingivitis and to manage gum disease. If we can nip gingivitis in the bud it is better for your oral health because we are able to minimise the damage to your gums and jaw. If gingivitis progresses to gum disease the gums start to pull away from the teeth to form pockets. These pockets fill with bacteria and debris exacerbating the problem.
